I prefer RealFont 2.1's WindChimes over RF2.3 because it sounds more natural to me. I also like Crisis GM 1.8's sweep and halo pads over RF2.3. I prefer Crisis GM 1.8's DrumKit over RF2.3 because it packs more "punch". RealFont 2.3 is my main GM MIDI soundfont as I like generally like it overall, but I set up a bunch of presets that use pieces of the other soundfonts that I prefer over RealFont 2.3įor example, I prefer SGM-180's Distortion Guitar over RF2.3 because it doesn't sound as harsh or "brassy.". However, because the volume of that preset is lower than the other ones, I've had to increase the volume by 6 dB in XMPlay's bank/preset setup to get it nearly in line with the other sounds. I also use Crisis General MIDI 3.01's main Piano preset which is taken from the creator's custom recording/sampling of a Steinway Grand. I have a Yamaha SCC1T2 soundfont for some special non-bank 0 instruments, as well as a special Creative AWE bank for those AWE specific MIDIs that use it. I use RealFont 2.3, RealFont 2.1, Crisis General MIDI 1.8, SGM-180, and Fluid R3 GM/GS. I have a really complex MIDI bank setup for XMPlay that uses about two dozen different GM banks set up in such a way that suits my musical tastes for pretty much all types of MIDI music from classical, to top 40, rock, jazz, even hard rock/metal.
